THE SECOND CITY
Design Theme
Someone used to say 'if you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito'. Indeed, the argument goes, but when things are too small, they are taken for granted.
Small does not mean unimportant, and the existence of 'The Second City' proves it. We have in fact named that dense network of microbes and microscopic beings that currently live together and within us. They may not make the noise of a mosquito, but they are fundamental to the well-being of life. Their size, however, while it has defined their development and spread, reduces their actual perception by us: human beings rely mainly on visual perception and in an increasingly aesthetic society, not to be seen is to be forgotten.
This project is an experiment to demonstrate how closely we collaborate with the microorganisms in our environment, even within cities. It aims to create a map that shows the locations of these microorganisms and to help alleviate any fears people may have about their presence. Essentially, it seeks to raise awareness about the important role that microorganisms play in our lives and to encourage a better understanding of our relationship with them.
Revealing means paying attention and paying attention leads to change. It can be done, starting small.moments.
